Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE RIDING A FIXED GEAR (FIXIE) OR SINGLE-SPEED BIKE?

Before riding a fixie or single-speed bike, you should be aware of a few basic things, including:

– The Highway Code regarding cycling safety

– How to stop your bicycle

–  How to maintain your bike

–  How to repair your bicycle in emergencies

Fixies are great for commuting, running errands, and exploring new places. They are also easy to ride and maintain, especially with the high-quality components used when creating a Quella Bicycle!!

Is a single-speed bike a good choice for beginners?

A single-speed bike is a solid choice for adult beginners because they don’t need to worry about gears!  However, a single-speed bike will also suit advanced cyclists who want to challenge themselves, fixie bikes are brilliant for serious cyclists wanting to build strength and improve their pedal stroke.

For adult beginners, we recommend our entry-level bicycle, the Quella Nero

What are the advantages of a single-speed bike?

Single-speed bikes have just one gear, so are easier for beginners who may be a little nervous of using multiple gears.  Single-speed bikes are also more affordable than geared bicycles.  The Quella Bicycle range starts from £429 for our Nero bike to £1,995 for our Varsity Electric bicycle.

Single-speed bicycles are also lighter than their geared counterparts, ideal for those longer commutes.

How can I customise my Quella Bicycle?

There are several ways in which you can customise your Quella Bicycle!  We love building new rides with unique and personalised features and will always be happy to turn your vision into reality.  Customisable features include but are not limited to:

–  Your bicycle frame
–  Spray colour
–  Personalised components, such as head caps, logos and tyre valves
–  Tyres
–  Accessories, such as mudguards and chain sets

Can you stop pedalling on a fixed-gear bike?

No, on most fixed-gear bicycles, the pedals and rear wheel connect directly with no freewheel.   As a result, when you stop pedalling, you also stop travelling, however all of our bikes are supplied with a flip-flop hub with a single-speed, freewheel sprocket so you don’t have to ride your bike in a fixed mode if you don’t want to.

To switch between ‘single speed, freewheel’ and ‘fixed’ modes, it’s a simple case of flipping the rear wheel around.

Want something with a bit more horsepower?  We also provide an electric bicycle range. This collection includes the Electric Varsity bicycle, with an all-in-one hub motor.
